Why Winning the Freedom to Marry in Washington matters to Oregonians

The other day, we had a conversation with our friends at Basic Rights Oregon about the Marriage Equality campaign in Washington. We know that members of the Oregon progressive community support marriage equality for everyone, but we couldn't help but get the feeling that some Oregonians were feeling a little detached from what's happening to the north. Maybe it's because they're feeling swamped by our own local and state elections.

Democrats support Marriage Equality

We noted yesterday that the Democratic Party was almost certainly adding Marriage Equality to its party platform at this year's convention, along with other supportive GLBTQ policies.

Marriage Equality part of Democrat platform

Looks like the Democratic Party's new platform is going to include support for marriage equality and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act as well as a clear rejection of DOMA. (Updated: To be approved during the party convention reviewed August 10-12 and approved during the party convention in September.)

PRIDE: Sun, Fun, Signatures

We had a great time at the PRIDE Festival and Parade this weekend! Volunteers for the Corporate Kicker for K-12 campaign were out in force, collecting petition signatures. (The deadline is just a few weeks away so if you haven't signed it yet, do it soon!)

Here are some pictures from the festivities, from our friends at Basic Rights Oregon:

This weekend in fun progressive times -- it's the Portland PRIDE Festival!
One of our favorite events of the year, the PRIDE Festival is always a fabulous time.

Our friends over at Basic Rights Oregon will be marching in the parade on Sunday, hosting a Gaylabration dance party on Friday night and hanging out at waterfront park all weekend long!

What Yesterday's Excitement Tells Us about Support for Marriage Equality

Big news yesterday.

The results rolled in that North Carolinians voted to ban marriage rights for same sex couples. But our nation's conversation yesterday was focused on the event that occurred shortly after-- the powerful statement from President Obama in support of marriage equality.

A Tough--But Smart--Decision From Basic Rights Oregon

After engaging in smart political research and community outreach, our allies at Basic Rights have come to a very tough decision about not going to the ballot with marriage equality in 2012.

Based on all of the factors that need to be in place to win, BRO has made the right political calculation to keep moving forward by building public support. To reach their decision, they relied on input from members of the community and a board of advisors made up of some of the most respected political minds in the state. The decision was a tough one, but the right one to make.

Guest Letter: Why Marriage Matters to Jill and Donnella

Donnella appears in one of Basic Rights Oregon's videos, and she wrote today's blog post to explain why marriage matters to her.

Donnella is a Movement Therapist in private practice. She and her partner Jill live with their 1.5-year-old son in Southeast Portland. And here is her story.

When I met Jill, I knew I had found my someone special.  As we got to know each other, it was clear she was the person I was waiting for.
