The Truth Behind Americans Elect, An Our Oregon Series
A new Astroturf third party effort, funded by hedge fund millionaires, has landed in Oregon. Americans Elect is paying for signature gathering in Oregon to become recognized as a political party.
Unfortunately, the media’s reporting on Americans Elect has been uncritical, failing to ask any important questions of the shadowy group. Here’s Our Oregon’s series on the organization, exposing who’s behind them, how they operate, and what they want to accomplish.
Part I. Americans Elect: The Truth Behind the Corporate Scheme to Swipe the 2012 Election
Part II. A Shell Game Designed to Block Real Democratic Participation
Part III. Who's Behind the Astroturf Organization
Part IV. Paying Big Money for Signatures

There are people on their board from all over the political spectrum. Including nonpartisan think tank members, former campaign managers for both democrats and republicans, academics, and even one soldier, in addition to business and investment people. I have researched this group and I am not sure what to make of them, exactly. But I registered with them so I can vote in their caucus...I will see where it goes when it comes to the Presidental election, though. The idea is good, I am just a little unsure of the motive.
Americans Elect is a conniving organization which is run by people associated with the tea party (ie the Koch Brothers). They have had many petitions out there which were very deceiving and confusing. Quite a few people signed their petitions who ultimately do not agree with their politics and viewpoints. Americans Elect is running on deceiving the people.
You really need to address the underlying desire for 3rd parties when you talk about Americans Elect. It seems to me that you either need to (1) explain why we should be content with the 2 party system or (2) explain how we could accommodate 3rd parties without it leading to "spoiler" effects. From what I've learned, the most promising approach seems to be Instant Runoff Voting. If you support the second position, then Fairvote.org looks like a good organization to point people toward.
